With the incorporation of Curtiss
C-46 was possible to reached Brazil's north and northeast. VARIG
created three different configurations: Luxury (passengers only),
Mixed (passengers and cargo) and Freighter (cargo only). The Luxury
version had only 36 seats, in a 2+2 configuration. The seats were
wider than the original configuration. The Mixed version had 46
seats in 2+3 configuration.
After purchase Real-Aerovias-National, in 1961, VARIG's C-46 fleet
doubled. In order to get more power on takeoff, some C-46 were
equipped with turbojet Turbomeca, installed under aircraft's wings.
VARIG also modified some C-46, equipping them with Curtiss Electric
propellers and more powerful engines. Those aircraft were known as
Super C-46. Curtiss C-46 and Super C-46 operated VARIG's main
domestic lines during 50s and 60s, as well as some international
routes to South America.
